Gold Dust Home

Shelby Sloan has been working hard the past year (a full 365 days from the day she signed the papers) to bring Orlando a new home goods store that isn't quite like anything the city has seen.

This charming 1930s bungalow on Lang Avenue is filled with some of the most colorful and eclectic goods from all over the globe. Hailing from Mexico, Morocco, England, and, yes, Orlando, this shop features a variety of artisan-made goods with a mix of new and vintage.

The family heritage is Mexican, so because of strong ties to the country and its artisans, you will find many items she and sister Allie have traveled for and personally sourced for Gold Dust Home. As you find yourself enamored by every inch of the space, make sure to get the whole backstory on the origin of items you pick up that make them even more exciting and endearing.

Shelby started her boutique journey ten years ago at a shop called Atomic Garden in California, an eco-friendly, elevated shop, and she had bosses that were like mentors to her. That is where she found some lines that she fell in love with and now gets to carry in her very own boutique. With lots of help from her sister Allie (plus mom, dad, and grandma) she’s bringing her full vision and experience in retail and merchandising to life.

As you walk through the very cozy and colorful bungalow, you'll enter different rooms holding their theme of home decor. The furniture room will have larger rotating pieces as they sell, the kitchen holds entertaining, bath, and body items, and the living area space will be filled with a mix of gift items, books, games, candles, accessories, and more decor. When you walk through, you will want to take your time perusing. "We want people to linger and soak it in," noted Allie.

Shelby added that the items in the bungalow kitchen area are great for dinner party items: "A big thing we always say is fancy, not formal, so it's not stuffy but elevated and treating your guests to an experience."

There is a good chance that what dazzles your eyes will be from artisans from other countries, like glassware from a 19 person glass blowing shop in Oaxaca or intricately made candles from Casa Viviana, which has a rich history, and the sisters have loved so much they took her class in Oaxaca.

You'll also find pieces from local makers like Planet Moon RockrockSTAR Ceramics, and keep an eye out for flowers from my favorite florist/installation artist Every Other Weekend.

The thought process behind the items they choose comes from the idea of a modern heirloom - something you will want to keep forever.

There's no need to feel overwhelmed by hearing where the items come from or their handmade process and assuming you'll be priced out of shopping here. "The pricing varies from high to low, depending on whether you want something little, handmade, or big. There are a lot of gift items that cater to many people, the young hip person to the fancier shopper," noted Allie.

The soft opening begins Friday, October 21, and the shop hours will be 11 am - 7 pm, Tuesday - Sunday.

The address is 1309 Lang Avenue, right across the street from the House on Lang, making this area a great stop and shop for local goods.  Follow them on IG @gold_dust_home.
